Abstract
In this paper the author tells how sound is produced and defines intensity. Experiments and investigations made by the aeronautics branch of the Department of Commerce are described. These deal with the theory of engine mufflers and sound-proofing of airplane cabins. There appears to be no prospect that a device will be developed which at the cost of a pound or two of additional weight will eliminate the noise.
