The main purpose is to use thermal breakdown as a mechanism for achieving conditions (temperatures) for thermochemical conversion, i.e. pyrolysis and gasification, of carbonaceous materials. In particular for biochar, it is of special interest to compare the magnitude of the applied voltage and power needed to produce pyrolysis temperatures, as well as the time that such temperatures are reached under different applied voltages. It is known that biochar has lower electrical and thermal conductivities than graphite, but the temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity is stronger.
