While pipeline materials are generally ductile and thus resistant to elevated strains, US Department of Transportation (DOT) statistics suggest that between 1991 and 2000, around 30 pipeline failures were attributed to natural forces. Natural forces are defined in general causal categories including subsidence, landslide, mudslide, frost heave and washout.
