The Contact Ratio of a Space-Curve Meshing-Wheel Transmission Mechanism

The space-curve meshing-wheel (SCMW) is a novel mechanical mechanism suitable for small devices. In this paper, a design formula of the contact ratio of SCMW is derived from the space-curve meshing equation, which has been established in previous studies on the basis of a kinematic analysis. A specific SCMW mechanism capable of smooth transmission is then designed and crafted, and its rotational motion is measured in an experiment. In summary, a SCMW designed using the proposed contact ratio formula can perform successive and smooth transmission as long as the contact ratio is greater than 1.
